New Production Beefier Trunk Lid Hinges
The OEM hinges are thin stamped steel and may get damaged from the elements or accidental force applied to them. I’m having them made but with a slightly thicker material to hopefully prevent that issue. I still have to remove my own hinge to have the mounting point to examine. Too bad it’s quite a hassle to do it because this requires unbolting the hinge from the trunk lid and removing the painted trim around the rear window to access the nuts to remove it from the body.
December 2022 -
Finally getting around to making these. This will be a proof of concept of what my buddy is capable of doing with his R&D knowhow with the access to tools we have to try to make these “in house”!
The alpha version shown below. These were made out of 1/8” aluminum they are much lighter than the OEM steel and a little stronger to resist the wobble but realistically you’re not supposed to wobble them. I think the plan here is to offer a few variants. An aluminum version of the original design, a beefier version that should resist and survive some abuse, and of course same things but made of other materials. The major thing I want to get out of this is a quick detach and reattach system. This way it can be removed for whatever reason and easily put back in without fiddling with the 4 bolts for alignment.
The next goal after completion of the rears will be doing the same thing but with the front hinges. I want to be able to swap my other hood back and forth willy-nilly in under 30 seconds.
May 2023:
Family/Life/Work stuff has been a barrier to continuing efficiently here but we are chugging along on this. Working on figuring out a simple yet elegant solution to mounting these to the trunk side for the quick detach reattachment without having to spend time realigning the trunk for the body lines.
September 2023:
One of these days we will have trunk hinges…
