Designed in Japan by Mazda. Engineered in the UK by Hawtal Whiting. Tested at Millbrook Proving Grounds in the UK. Built in Japan by Kurata (now known as KeyLex) for Mazda. Production only ran from 1992 to 1993, when production ended many cars were still unsold with the last cars sold in 1995. Suzuki was involved since Mazda was sourcing their drivetrain. The drivetrain is very much like the one found in a Suzuki HA21S Alto Works of the time mounted midship. Towards the end of the production run, Suzuki later also had their own rebadged model to sell, named the Cara.
For people that wanted more power output, Suzukisport had competition only ECUs made (N1, N2, C1, etc) along with upgraded bolt ons like exhaust manifold, turbos and clutches for these vehicles. Click Here to read more about the devlelopment history of the AZ-1

Original Colors:
All were once Classic Red (Mazda paint code SU) or Siberia Blue (Mazda paint code NZ) with a two tone Venetian Grey (Mazda paint code Z5) lower half (bumpers and side skirts). The colored seat insert tells you what color the car originally was if it isn’t red or blue at quick glance.
Interior color was Off Black (Mazda paint code PAO).
As sales weren’t so good, special editions were created. They took the original red and blue cars to paint black, white and silver as a solid color to become Mazdaspeed or M2 1015 models.
Difference between standard, Mazdaspeed and M2 1015:
They were mostly appearance packages not performance packages.
Mazdaspeed A-spec models have a unique front bumper, front hood/bonnet and rear wing by default. These body parts were made of fiberglass instead of the original injected plastic.
There were also additional add on options such as a rear strut tower bar, dual tip muffler with a serialized Mazdaspeed plate, limited slip differential, sport tuned green colored shocks, and a front strut tower brace. Original colors available were: Brilliant Black, Classic Red and Silverstone Metallic.
Mazdaspeed specific alloy wheels were also available.
M2 1015 by M2 Performance; M2 Incorporated models have a unique front hood with two yellow fog lights built in between the headlights, rear wing, and rear stainless M2-1015 badge. These body parts were made of fiberglass instead of the original injected plastic. The mirrors are also painted body color on M2s. Original colors available were: White, black and silver.
